The Effects of Socially-prescribed Perfectionism on Social Anxiety: Mediation effects of Actual-Ought Self-Discrepancy and Maladaptive Self-focused Attention
Alternative Abstract
The present study investigated whether actual-ought self-discrepancy and maladaptive self-focused attention would mediate the relationship between socially-prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety among adults in their 20s and 30s. Subjects were 220 adults who were asked to complete self-report questionnaires to assess actual-ought self discrepancy, maladaptive self-focused attention and socially-prescribed perfectionism, social anxiety. Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) analysis was performed using AMOS 22.0. The results were as follows: First, maladaptive self-focused attention mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. Second, actual-ought self discrepancy has not statistically significantly mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. Finally, the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety was sequentially mediated by actual-ought self discrepancy and maladaptive self-focused attention. Based on results, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed with suggestions for future research.
