Abstract
Alternative Abstract
Currently many urban cities in Korea implemented exclusive bus lanes operation, but none of the cities introduced the bus signal priority system as a functional element of the signal control systems. Thus, there was no field test result reported on the performance change from the introduction of the bus signal priority system. This study intended to evaluate performance of the bus signal priority system based on field test. Three signalized intersections in Hanam City was selected as a test site which installed a DSRC-based bus signal priority system. Before and after study was performed with consideration of two control variables such as peak vs. off-peak, passenger car vs. bus, using two measure of effectiveness(MOE), speed and volume. In terms of traffic volume, passenger car in a major direction reduced by 7.4% but bus increased by 12.8% after introducing the bus signal priority system. There was no significant volume change in both passenger car and bus for the cross street. In terms of average speed, passenger car in a major direction increased by 6.5% and bus increased by 10.5% after introducing the bus signal priority system. Statistical tests showed that those speed differences were statistically significant at the 95% of confidence level. In addition, the quality of distribution of travel times was also improved. Therefore, the average speed and quality of flow of bus could be greatly improved by introducing the DSRC-based bus signal priority system.
