The method to calculate the speed based on length of skid mark is the most traditional one and is widely accepted by the judiciary authorities so far.
However, the speed calculated using the length of a skid mark is the one just before skidding because the method to calculate the speed does not consider the rate of deceleration in a transient brake section of a motor vehicle as well as the rate of deceleration in a skidding section. Thus the method tends to be calculated lower speed than the actual one in general.
In this study, correlation analysis was performed about the deceleration of transient brake section, relationship of skid-mark distance by speed before braking from skidding section, relationship of brake distance by speed before braking, relationship between skid-mark distance and brake distance, and change in deceleration of skidding section based on brake distance, skid-mark distance, pre-braking speed, and deceleration through brake experiment by actual motor vehicles like a passenger car, etc.
As a result of analysis, the deceleration in a transient brake section presents as passenger car is 0.73g and large bus is 0.58g respectively.
According to the relationship between skid-mark distance by speed before braking and brake distance by speed before braking in skidding section, if speed before braking rises, skid-mark and brake distance also increase, and if speed gets higher, the deceleration in skidding section gets lower
Furthermore, in order to verify the reliability, significance testing about the correlation of experimental data was carried out.
Based on the above, this study proposes Model 1 derived from a physical equation by applying the principle of energy conservation and Model 2 derived through a nonlinear regression analysis, and chooses the final model between Model 1 and 2 the mean of error ratio is lower. Moreover, this study analyzed the difference in speed between the calculated speed from models and real speed, and conducted a verification through comparison with other existing models.
This study has a significance in that the researcher has presented a proper model for analysis of speed just before braking and the direction of speed analysis by pointing out the problems in calculation of speed just before skidding which has been applied as a standard for judicial disposition so far at the time of traffic accident.
If the result of this study are rendered a public opinion in the future, it is judged as being a help to government's policy to protect the occurrence of unfair victims by caculating more accurate speed, and to reduce the traffic accident by strengthening the punishment for drivers as the scope of overspeed extends at the time of traffic accident disposition.
