Abstract
Alternative Abstract
Worldwide, it's well-known tendency that the proportion of the elder population out of total population increases rapidly. In Korea, the proportion of the elderly over 65 was reported 7.9% as of February 2002 with the expectation of 14.4% by 2019 due to the increase in average lifespan and the decrease in childbirth rate. And this enables us to expect Korean society will be entering aging society soon. The significance of the cognitive function and depression in the elder population is gathering strength, therefore this study aims to investigate the casual relationship of cognitive disorder and depression and to assess the effects of sex, age and educational background on these area. In this study, 906 cases in 21 towns·counties·dong who reside in Whasung City were investigated with the target population over 65. The data analysis set consists of 793 responding cases excluding some rejects to respond. The summary of analysis is as follows. A. There was a dominancy in female 577(72.8%) over male 216(27.2%) with the average age of 73.30(±5.88). In terms of educational background, "being educated" 450(56.7%) was higher than "no education" 343(43.3%). The prevalence rate of cognitive disorder was 185(23.3%). The prevalence rate of depression over the score 8 was 200(25.2%) and over the score 10 was 127(16.0%). B. The score of K-MMSE and SGDS were investigated by each group of sex, age, educational and religious background. The average score of K-MMSE and SGDS were 25.43(±3.38) and 4.97(±3.97) respectively. There was the statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in K-MMSE between each group of sex, age and educational background. In SGDS, the statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was observed between age and educational background. The group of religious background didn't have a statistically significant difference both in K-MMSE and SGDS.. C. As a result of the logistic regression analysis compensating sex, age and educational background which affect the relationship of K-MMSE and SGDS indepently, there was observed the relationship between cognitive disorder and depression, sex, age, or educational background. In addition, the interaction by sex, age and educational background for the relationship of cognitive disorder and depression was assessed. As a result, the interaction by sex and depression didn't have a statistically significant effect on cognitive disorder (p=0.434). The interaction by age and depression (p=0.595), or by educational background and depression (p=0.958) didn't have a statistically significant effect on cognitive disorder. Therefore, it can be concluded that depression, sex, age and educational background have its own effect on cognitive disorder in independent way.
