Abstract
Alternative Abstract
This study empirically analyzes individual factors which have influence on the commencement and the success of international cooperative R&D projects of ocean science. The variables of this analysis were sampled from a government-supported research institute of Korea.
The conceptual model is divided in two categories. One is to find out the commencement factors of international cooperative R&D projects. The independent variables are individual factors of researchers; (1) the countries where researchers obtain their final degree (2) the countries where researchers stayed as post-doctoral or guest researchers (3) ages (4) years of employment (5) research fields (6) the number of papers published in the scientific journal registered in Science Citation Index (SCI), and (7) the number of projects which researchers have conducted. The dependent variable is whether the researcher conducted international cooperative R&D projects or not in the past ten years.
The other is to find out the success factors of international cooperative R&D projects. The independent variables are individual factors of researchers who conducted any international cooperative R&D projects as principal investigators in the past ten years; (1) the countries where researchers obtained their final degree (2) the countries where researchers stayed as post-doctoral or guest researchers (3) ages (4) years of employment (5) research fields (6) the number of papers published in the scientific journal registered in Science Citation Index (SCI), and (7) the number of projects which researchers have conducted. The dependent variable is success or failure of projects which is estimated by performance of the published papers.
The hypotheses were empirically verified by statistical analyses, and the important findings of the study are as follows:
1. The commencement of international cooperative R&D projects is influenced by some individual factors of researchers, for instance, the countries where researchers obtained their final degree, the number of projects which researchers have conducted, ages, and the years of employment. On the other hand, the countries where researchers stayed as post-doctoral or guest researchers, the number of papers published in the scientific journal registered in Science Citation Index (SCI), and research fields do not have significant influence on the commencement of international cooperative R&D projects.
2. The success of international cooperative R&D projects is influenced by some individual factors of principal investigators, for instance, the countries where researchers stayed as post-doctoral or guest researchers, research fields, and the years of employment. On the other hand, the countries where researchers obtained their final degree, the number of papers published in the scientific journal registered in Science Citation Index (SCI), the number of projects which researchers have conducted, and ages do not have significant influence on the success of international cooperative R&D projects.
