Alternative Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper seeks to find out the effect of corruption on the performance of Non-Governmental Organizations in Nigeria between 1990 and 2012. The timeframe of 1990-2012 was actually considered for this study because of main political events that happened in the era and again the roles of NGOs and civil societies at that time. Main objectives of the study are to obtain information on the practices of NGOs in Nigeria, identification of negative factors that hinder accountability, overseeing the corruption level in NGOs. Institutional theory is considered as a theoretical framework for this research as it attends to deeper and more resilient aspects of social structure. It explains why people tend to behave the same way in an organization. From the research survey, the result shows that majority of the staff of NGO are non-professional, there are some negative attitudes on the part of NGO workers and donors as regard fund management. Government role in corruption control is considered weak from the survey and weak institutions and environmental factors are main reasons for perpetual corruption in both private and public sectors. It is therefore crystal clear that corruption is a big blow to the performance of Non-Governmental Organization in Nigeria and lowering this effect and improving the performance of NGOs, all hand hands must be on deck. It is a collective responsibility and government must champion the cause in fighting corruption with all its might. Sadly enough, the current government is heavily involved in corruption, the hope lies on the coming president-elect as he is known as anti-corruption czar. The cumulative response from NGO experts and public prove that the corruption has significant effect on performance of Non-governmental organization in Nigeria.
