This paper proposes a fault identification method for the asymmetric converter in a switched reluctance motor (SRM). The identification method include fault diagnosis and tolerance control. The switches in an asymmetric converter and gate drivers are easily destroyed while the role of these components is important. When a fault is emerged on the switches it can cause a primary and secondary problem to the system. In this paper, the diagnostic method relies on analyzing the Park’s vector representation of the current variation from short and open faults. The fault tolerance method utilizes the characteristics of the SRM. It can diagnose and tolerate the fault without additional equipment. Simulations and experiments have been performed on the 1.5kW SRM drive and its results are presented to verify the validity of the proposed method.
