This thesis proposes an adaptive early termination algorithm using a coding unit (CU) depth history (AECH). The proposed algorithm uses the temporal correlation of colocated coding tree units (CTUs). AECH traces a CU depth history and calculates the mean and standard deviation of the history. Then, the target CU depth range is adaptively chosen, which is defined by the standard deviation from the mean. The proposed algorithm can skip the CU depths, which are out of range. Hence, it can significantly reduce the computational complexity. AECH shows time saving performances of 41.33% (low delay B) and 40.44% (low delay P) compared to the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) test model (HM) 12.0 version. In addition, the proposed algorithm increments Bjontegaard delta bitrate only about 1.09% (low delay B) and 1.22% (low delay P).
