Abstract | The next generation network is the era of ubiquitous networking, offering connectivity and services by integrating and utilizing different access network technologies. IEEE 802.21 standard or Media Independent Handover services (MIH) address the problem of integrating different type of network access technologies and provides a way of seamless handovers among different (heterogeneous) networks. However improvement can be made in IEEE 802.21 enabled networks to make it more effective and efficient. In this thesis we proposed an enhanced version of IEEE 802.21 by adding new features in mobile nodes, base stations and Media Independent Information service. Caches and database are introduced for storage of dynamic network information in Base stations and Media Independent Information service (MIIS) server respectfully to decrease the handover delay and therefore increase network efficiency. Similarly timely network information updates are sent by BSs and MIIS to convey dynamic network information later used by MNs to select best Point of Access through fuzzy decision making technique. We also lessen the number of unnecessary HOs thus decrease the overall network load. Evaluation results illustrate the better performance of proposed scheme in different aspects as compared to IEEE 802.21 and other MIH related schemes. | - |
