Alternative Abstract
China has enjoyed a great economic and social progress during past five decades. The automobile industry played an important role in China’s industrialization process. Prior to 1949, there was really no automobile industry to speak of in China although there were many kinds of automobiles imported from other countries running on the roads of China. New China's automotive industry started in July 15, 1953, when the First Automobile Works (FAW) was set up in Changchun City, Jilin Province. And in July 14, 1956, China's very first lot of 12 road vehicles, 'Jiefang' or liberation 4 tons cargo trucks (which you can still see in large numbers), rolled out of the factory, putting an end to the time when China was unable to produce our own motor vehicles. However, until 1984 china’s automobile industry had developed slowly. It fell far behind developed countries because of domestic political factors and western economic and technological blockade. And, there weren’t MNCs investing in China’s automotive industry. Its history was wholly one of self-reliance and hard work. A fast developing phase in China's automobile history started since 1984 when the first automotive manufacturing joint venture, Beijing Jeep Corporation, Ltd. (BJC), was established on Jan 15, 1984 in China. Nowadays almost every Multi-national Corporations (MNCs) concerning automobiles have invested in China. My paper focuses on MNCs’ entry process, strategy, role in and impact on Chinese automobile industry.
